Phenomenal Night

La noche fenomenal

A TV program team devoted to paranormal phenomena discovers that some anomalous events, that have never been registered before, have become real in the same Barcelona where they do their program. At the same time the city is lashed by a seism and the sudden incursion of characters coming from another Barcelona, who come to ask for help from members of The Phenomenal Night, as the TV program is called. Throughout this novel, sometimes hilarious, sometimes melancholy and at other times philosophic, the narrator introduces every member of the team. We will meet, among others, the director, bon vivant and focused on saving the program from its disappearance: De Diego, skeptical about everything except inexistent animals: the Chess Player, a passionate activist, with his extinct pipe between his teeth; Paulina, an expert in old civilizations, who is writing a thesis on the oldest temple of humanity; Ro, the script writer and collector of cases of flying saucers; Hermosilla, the editor of an esoteric magazine, faint-hearted for the important things in life… And a long series of characters from a comic and tragic Barcelona, probably real at times and not so much at many others, accompany this group of friends, as the narrator’s mother, who has telepathic powers; the historical publisher and bookseller José Batlló; the writer of western novels Carl Malone; and probably the absolute protagonist of this story, a fragile girl called Isis, not to be called Isabel. At times before them and at others by their side, a mysterious retired old man, hooked on Anadusian rock, Mr Comejuán, who will keep any new border that this group of friends cross. Everything starts when a drawing teacher discovers that he has become Walt Disney…

This is a novel of friendship and esotericism, unstoppable, full of romanticism, extravagant, frenetic, crazy and poetic.
